A hit counter is part of the charm of a personal website, and Neocities is where many of them live today. Live Flag Counter gives you the classic counter with a twist: a flag for every country your visitors come from.

It is a plain image with a link — no JavaScript and nothing to install — so it works on free Neocities sites too.

Step by step

  1. Create your counter

Design it on our homepage. The badge layout gives the classic hit-counter look; the grid and list show your top countries. For an old-school hit counter that counts every page load, open Advanced and choose Every view. Click Create my counter and copy the HTML code.

  2. Edit your page

Sign in to Neocities, open your Dashboard and click Edit next to the page — for example index.html.

  3. Paste the code

Paste the code where the counter should appear — usually near the bottom, just before </body> — and click Save.

  4. Visit your site

Open your site to see the counter. Your visit is the first one counted; click the counter to see the full statistics.

What the code looks like

This is the HTML code. Yours contains your own counter ID instead of YOUR-ID, so always copy it from your counter's page.

Tips for Neocities

  • Neocities has no shared footer, so paste the code into every page you want counted — they all add up on the same counter.
  • “Once” counts each visitor a single time; “Every view” counts every page load, like the hit counters of the early web.
  • Building your site with Eleventy, Hugo or another generator? Put the code in your layout template once.

Questions

Does it work on a free Neocities account?

Yes. The counter is an image loaded from our server, which a free Neocities site shows like any other picture.

Can I make it match my retro site?

Yes. Pick your own colours, a transparent background, the mono font and the flag shape in the builder.
